What does Biodegradable mean?
Biodegradable is the ability for materials to break down and return to back to nature. Materials must completely break down and decompose and this generally happens a short time after disposal. Biodegradable products help to reduce the buildup of waste, contributing to a safer, cleaner and healthier environment.
There has been a lot of discussion around plastic and the impact it is having on our planet. Plastic has tripled in our oceans since the 1960’s this is when plastic became popular around the world. Unfortunately, plastic ends up in the ocean. The need for Biodegradable and Eco-friendly items is becoming increasingly important in an effort to protect our planet from pollution.
Eco-friendly packaging and sustainable products are also gaining popularity around the world which has been fantastic for the environment.
Thankfully, Ireland is moving towards the ban of both single use plastics and a total ban on micro beads. All government departments, public bodies, and schools have banned single use plastic. Followed by Ireland banning the sale, manufacture, import and export of products containing microbeads on February 6th 2020. The Microbeads Act also makes it an offence to dispose of any substance containing microbeads by pouring it down the drain or into marine or freshwater environments.
Many retailers are now providing paper straws and reusable bags. It is also great that producers are looking for innovative ways to reuse plastic and even turn it into a biodegradable product.
Atlantic life is a wonderful Irish still water company that is sustainable sourced within Ireland and packaged using only biodegradable bottles and labels. It is also 100% recyclable. This process of creating sustainable bottles is done using technology that brings 50% biodegradation of the plastic product in under 3 years. The process continues until the plastic products become part of the organic components of soil as any naturally biodegraded material, such as wood, become part of soil.
