Barley Bread

This bread takes about three hours to prepare, so it’s one for when you have time on your hands.


7 Grams of dried yeast.

1 egg, beaten,

½ cup of lukewarm water,

2 Tablespoons of butter,

2 tablespoons of honey,

2 cups of Barley flour,

Half a teaspoon of salt.


Mix the yeast, water, honey and then salt.

Stir in the flour and knead for less than 5 minutes on a lightly floured surface.

Place the dough in a large bowl (greased) an cover with a towel.

Leave this in a warm place for an hour and a half -it should rise slightly.


Then take out the dough and knead again for a few minutes.

Shape it and put it on a baking tray (greased) and leave again for another hour.

Preheat the oven to 215 degrees C.


Bake for 15 to 20 minutes -it should sound hollow when tapped when it’s done.

Turn onto a cooling rack and wrap the bread in a towel to cool.
