Natural Sun Protection from Evergreen Healthfoods

The weather in Galway has been great for the last while, let’s hope this is just the start! If I’m going out in the sun, I make sure to use a natural sunscreen. I consider what you put on your body, just as important as what you eat or drink. Our skin is our largest organ and because it is porous, it absorbs what goes onto it. The reason I choose non-toxic sun protection is because the chemical filters used in most ordinary sunscreens which are added to protect your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays have been, according to studies, found to have hormone disrupting and cell damaging effects.

Oxybenzone, sometimes called benzophenone-3 is one of the most hazardous ingredients to avoid. Other sunscreen agents to watch out for are octocrylene and avobenzone, as these are both associated with skin allergies. The good news is that as we are becoming more aware of the toxic effects of sunscreen, there is more demand and production of safer alternatives. The safer alternatives we have here in Evergreen contain mineral filters like zinc, which reflect or absorb the sunlight, but don’t penetrate the skin.

To save you the hassle of reading the small print of every label, I have scanned the natural range of sunscreens here in Evergreen Healthfoods and picked out a few that contain only natural mineral filters and no harsh ingredients.

Best for Kids

Green People Organic Children’s sun lotion SPF 30.

It’s gentle on sensitive skin, and a firm favourite with customers who have young children.  It provides UVA and UVB protection. UVB rays can cause superficial sunburn while UVA rays penetrate deeper and can cause lasting damage. It’s unscented and often recommended in cases of eczema or prickly heat.

Best for swimmers

Jason Family Sunscreen SPF 45.

This cream has a lovely summery, but naturally sourced aroma. It’s not sticky, but still has water resistance for up to 80 minutes. Perfect for a family day out.

Best for under make-up

Lavera Sun sensitive SPF 30.

This gentle sunscreen dries with a light texture matt finish which can be used as a primer for make-up. It has been specifically formulated for sensitive skin and it has both UVA and UVB protection.

Best for high protection

Aloe Pura organic aloe vera sun lotion SPF 50.

A light lotion with extracts of aloe vera, jojoba, avocado and chamomile. It provides UVA and UVB protection. It comes in a 200ml tube which lasts a long time, so it’s great value for money.

Thanks for reading and be sure to protect your skin naturally during this sunny weather! Polly
