What is Serine?
Serine is a non-essential amino acid. This means that it can be synthesised in the body and does not need to be consumed through the diet. Serine is derived from the amino acid glycine. For the body to be able use serine, it must have sufficient levels of vitamin B3, B6 and folic acid. It is involved in many important functions in the body. It is most notably needed for the efficient functioning of the brain and the central nervous system. This amino acid is also important for muscle formation, a healthy immune system and the functioning of RNA and DNA. Many foods naturally contain serine, including meat, soy, dairy products and peanuts.
