What Are Essential Fatty Acids?
Essential Fatty Acids, or EFAs, are fatty acids that must be consumed as the body cannot synthesis it and it is required for good health. Linolenic and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) are both essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential to building specialised fats Omega-3 and Omega-6. Omega-3 and Omega-6 have many potential benefits in the body; they are believed to help support heart health and can help alleviate systems of menstrual pain and joint pain. Fatty acids are also essential in influencing your brain's integrity and ability to perform. Linolenic, which makes Omega-6 can be found in leafy green vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains. Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) which makes Omega-3, which is then converted to EPA and DHA, can be found in many vegetables, beans, nuts and fruits. Ideally, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids should be between 1:1 and 4:1. ALA rich foods should be consumed daily to ensure you are receiving all the brain health benefits it possesses.
