What are B Vitamins?

There are 8 B vitamins, all of which are considered essential to maintaining your health. Thiamine (B1) is the first B vitamin, sometimes known as the “anti-stress” vitamin because it helps the body deal with stresses, supporting immune function. Riboflavin (B2) is the next B vitamin, and one which has an antioxidant effect. Antioxidants help to stop free radicals from causing damage to the cells. Niacin (B3) is partially responsible for the body’s hormone production, and may help with circulation or inflammation. Pantothenic acid (B5) is a vitamin with several roles; it is responsible for red cell production, hormone production, maintaining good digestive health and aids other B vitamins. Pyridoxine (B6) is a B vitamin with strong links to the brain. It helps in the production of neurotransmitters, as well as being necessary for brain development and function. Biotin (B7) is required for cell growth, in particular hair and nail growth. Folic acid (B9) is vital for brain development and function. It contributes to the production of DNA and RNA, genetic materials which are of the utmost importance during times of growth i.e. pregnancy or childhood. Cobalamine (B12) is required to maintain proper function and development of the brain and nerves, amongst many other parts of the body.
