Vitamin B9 (Folate)
What is Vitamin B9?
Vitamin B9, which is more commonly known as folic acid or folate acid is one of eight B vitamins. When vitamin B9 occurs naturally in foods it is referred to as ‘folic acid’ and when it is synthetically made it is referred to as ‘folate acid’. This is done as it increases its stability. Vitamin B9 is most commonly known as a supplement important to pregnant women. However it has many functions essential for everyone. Folic acid can be found in spinach, yeast, liver and leafy green vegetables. Folate acid can be found in fortified foods and supplements. Vitamin B9 is important as it helps the body utilise amino acids, produce nucleic acids (e.g. DNA), aids rapid cell growth in infancy, adolescence and pregnancy and forms blood cells in the bone marrow. Folate and folic acid is especially important in infancy, adolescence and pregnancy, but also plays a vital role in all stages of life.
